An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Cotswolds covers almost 800 square miles of beautiful scenery, picture perfect villages, bustling market towns and so much more. Running through 5 counties, the Cotswolds is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the busy capital.
Your adventure to the tranquil countryside begins in Burford, often called the ‘gateway’ to the Cotswolds. Here, you’ll discover lines of ancient houses and shops as well as the oldest pharmacy in England, a three-arched medieval bridge and medieval almshouses.
Then, it’s onto Bibury, ‘the most beautiful village in England’, as described by William Morris. It’s home to Arlington Row, some of the most photographed cottages in the country. Built in 1380 as a monastic wool store, before converting into a row of weavers’ cottages in the 17th century, a visit to Bibury wouldn’t be complete without a walk along this quintessential row.
Famous for its honey-coloured stone architecture, your final stop will be in the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, Bourton-on-the-Water. Sitting aside the River Windrush, Bourton is one of the larger villages and has plenty of attractions, including the Model Village. Visit the Model Village to see a one-ninth scale model of the actual village as it was in the 1930’s when it was built — it’s the only Grade II listed model village in the country too!
In Bourton-on-the-Water, you’ll also enjoy lunch at The Old New Inn, a country inn serving British classics with seasonal and local ingredients.
